What programme were you on when you joined the GMTS and when did you leave?

I was on the Finance scheme from September 2003 to April 2006.

What has been your career journey progression with the NHS?

I started post-scheme at the Whittington as a cost accountant. Subsequent promotions within the Trust led to my appointment as Deputy Finance Director there in 2008. From there I moved to UCLH in May 2010 where I have been Deputy Finance Director since, covering two distinct roles – most recently focussing on delivery of high profile business cases for new hospitals. I have recently been asked to act up into the Finance Director role at UCLH following the existing FD leaving.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the scheme?

The NHS is one of the most dynamic and exciting environments to work in. It is never dull and always in the public eye. In some of the more forward-thinking NHS organisations it is highly commercial, with the opportunity to work with some of the best and most high profile executive and non-executive directors that you will find in any industry. The NHS always needs high quality, intelligent leaders and it rewards excellence well – the opportunities for promotion are unrivalled for those who have ability and commitment.

What has been your defining moment so far working for the NHS?

My most rewarding moment was getting the go-ahead from the Board and from Monitor to build a state-of-the-art new Proton Beam Therapy centre, surgery and cancer hospital that will dramatically improve the way that we can treat patients.
